All about Mouth Ulcers

A mouth ulcer is a painful inflammation in the mouth caused by a break in the mucous membrane (the lining of your mouth). Mouth ulcers can look like white, grey or yellow spots with an inflamed border and usually last for 2-4 days.

Mouth ulcers may be small, but as anyone who's had one will know, the pain can be very unpleasant and can make eating and drinking a real problem.

What causes them?

There are two kinds of mouth ulcer. One type can be caused by accidental damage in the mouth, such as rubbing from dentures, braces or tooth-brushing. The other can be triggered by tiredness, illness or stress. Some people find certain foods can cause them too.

Who gets them?

Anyone can get mouth ulcers, and each year around 8 million people in the UK do. They can be a common problem for teenagers, particularly at the beginning of puberty, and women often get them just before their periods. Unfortunately, many people suffer recurrent outbreaks.

How can I avoid getting them?

There's no way to be sure you'll never get a mouth ulcer, but there are some ways you can help to avoid them:

  • Eat a balanced diet to support your immune system
  • Take care of your mouth and teeth and see a dentist regularly
  • Do what you can to reduce stress - beneficial for lots of reasons!

How can I treat a mouth ulcer?

Soothagel works without a pharmacological effect to relieve pain, reduce inflammation and aid the mouth's own natural healing process. That's why it's also suitable for children over 6.

As well as treating mouth ulcers, Soothagel can also be used for gingivitis and denture rub. If symptoms worsen or last for more than five days though, it's advisable to see your doctor.
